Every title, with its proof.

We are completing the portraits of the dogs that made the Wanhelsing story. Each profile will be published only after the registered name, the image and the exact wording of every title have been verified.

Until then, the historic archive of documents stands open.

A title arrives as one line of print. Behind the line the measure is different: ring days across years of seasons, each one a long drive for a few minutes in front of a judge. A wirehaired coat prepared by hand — stripped, regrown, timed to be right on the day. A coat like that cannot be hurried: what the judge sees in two minutes was begun months earlier.

And the roads themselves. The historic archive holds eighty-four pages over twelve years, 2007 to 2018. The archive alone crosses fourteen countries: Italy, then Switzerland, Croatia, Slovakia, Slovenia, France, Germany, Sweden, Austria, Belgium, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Finland, Ukraine. Each page is one day of that work, kept.

The pages are plain about the means. Urkunden from a Swiss Clubschau; a CAC card from Bratislava, filled in by hand; rosettes from the Bundessiegerausstellung at Tulln; the cups from Helsinki photographed on a garden wall before being put away. One career of the house says what the years amount to: Vittakerdoolar, judged best of her breed seventy times, a group winner thirty — and the Best in Show wins, her breeder wrote, were past counting.

Most prizes go to a dog. One went to the breeding itself. Five times, the pages in the archive read the same way: «Trofeo Allevamento — 1° Classificato Esposizioni — 4° gruppo Bassotti», on ENCI certificates naming the Allevamento del Wanhelsing — in 2008, 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2015.

A single dog can carry a single day. A prize like this cannot be carried that way: first place among the breed’s allevamenti across a season of shows belongs to every dog the house bred and brought out, counted together.

The first two certificates carry the handover: 2008 is made out to the allevamento «di Friggione Francesca», 2010 «di Pascarella Gabriel Mario» — the same house, first in her name, then in his.

The certificate names no champion. It names the house.
