The breed

La razzaBassotto Tedesco a Pelo Duro

The wirehaired dachshund is an old German hunting breed — the courage of a big dog in a small, long body. Bred to think for itself underground, it makes a companion of character: alert, witty, deeply attached to its own people.

What stands behind the pedigree?
Four decades of one line, documented a generation at a time.
Who answers in year ten?
We do — in year one and in year ten.
Do puppies ever travel beyond Italy?
When the match is right, distance is a detail we plan together.

Il custode

This is the work of a lifetime.

Francesca and Gabriel have kept this one line for almost forty years. Home is a country house in Italy — gardens to patrol, a kitchen where puppies are underfoot, room for the old dogs to lie in the sun. The dogs are part of the family’s every day.

Every litter is raised in the house, in company from its first hour. It is a commitment that does not end at the gate. The kennel’s name is tattooed on Gabriel’s forearm. After almost forty years, it is simply part of him.

Selection philosophy

La selezione

Wanhelsing was never meant to be large. Each litter is rare because each pairing is studied — morphology, temperament, genetics, and the life the puppy will live. The relationship with a family does not end at handover; it begins there.

Few dogs, known by name.

How the house breeds by this idea

Studied pairings

Every mating is weighed for genetics and type before it is ever made.

Morphology without exaggeration

Health before fashion — a body built to work, and to last.

Temperament first

Dogs bred for family life as much as for the ring.

Responsibility for life

Support for every family — long after handover.

Life at Wanhelsing

La vitaevenings in the long grass, days between shows

The shows are one day in a hundred. The other ninety-nine are these: old logs to climb, hedges to patrol, long grass at evening, and a kitchen where every litter grows up underfoot — in company from its first days.

L’affidamento

A puppy here is never simply sold. It is entrusted — with care and responsibility on both sides.

A Wanhelsing litter is rare — born of studied pairings, raised in the house. Because there are few, the match matters more than the order of requests: we choose together whether Wanhelsing is right for you, and you for the dog.
